A tie won't get it done this time around. The Ohio High School Athletic Assocciation won't allow it.
Findlay and Sylvania Northview clash in a girls soccer rematch at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Division I regional semifinals at Ottawa Hills High School. The Trojans (11-5-1) and Wildcats (11-5-3) met in a Sept. 14 matchup at Elmer Graham Stadium and played to a scoreless tie.
There will be no deadlock Wednesday, with the winner moving on to the regional championship at noon Saturday in Ashland against either Medina (17-1-2) or Westlake (15-1-3).
Northview has been productive in the postseason, scoring 16 total goals in wins over Toledo Waite (7-0), Oregon Clay (4-3), Anthony Wayne (2-1) and Toledo St. Ursula (3-2, shootout).
Findlay has scored just seven postseason goals in three games, including 1-0 decisions over Celina and Lexington in the district. But FHS goalie Shannon Mills and the Trojans' defense has been impenetrable. Finlday has shut out all three tournament opponents, and has not allowed a goal in its last six matches.
"We've had a couple of shutouts in a row. We're playing well defensively," interim FHS coach Mark Laux said just before tournament play started.
"Offensively we went into a mid-season lull (1-3-1) where we weren't scoring goals. But down the stretch we've put together some good games."
The boys' soccer teams from Bluffton and Ottawa-Glandorf also played to a 0-0 tie during the regular season. The Pirates (10-6-2) and Titans (13-3-3) will settle the matter of bragging rights in a rematch at 7 p.m. today in the Division III regional tournament at Findlay's Elmer Graham Stadium.
Bluffton has been amazingly clutch in tournament play, winning the sectional final and both district games in overtime shootouts. O-G opened tournament play with a 2-1 decision over Miller City, then posted 2-0 district wins over Ottoville and Lima Temple Christian.
Today's winner advances to the Division III regional final at 3 p.m. Saturday in Ashland against the winner of the semifinal matchup between Huron and Doylestown Chippewa.
