Prep Athletics: NOL releases Fostoria after 2010-11 school year

FOSTORIA -- Fostoria High's path to the Northern Buckeye Conference is unimpeded.
The Northern Ohio League's principals voted Tuesday morning without dissent to release Fostoria from the league after the 2010-11 school year, allowing the school's athletic teams to join the NBC for its inaugural season of competition.
"When we wrote our letter to the (NOL) schools withdrawing from the league, we asked for our release after the 2010-11 school year," FHS athletic director Aaron Weidner said. "There was no naysaying or anything like that (from NOL officials)."
Fostoria's board of education unanimously voted in August to leave the NOL for the new NBC, citing significantly less travel and the ability to compete with schools more comparable in size.
Weidner expressed concern that the timing of Fostoria's decision coming at the beginning of the school year, NOL officials might have enough scheduling concerns to not grant Fostoria its release immediately after the normally required two years' notice.
That concern was allayed Tuesday, freeing the Redmen to join a conference that is expected to include Eastwood, Elmwood, Genoa, Lake, Otsego, Woodmore -- all current members of the Suburban Lakes League -- and Rossford out of the Northern Lakes League.
"I'm happy we'll be getting started with the NBC in its inaugural year," Weidner said. "I'm happy for the kids and I'm happy for the school, but at the same time it's going to be an uphill battle for the NOL."
The NOL, which is losing Galion and Upper Sandusky to the North Central Conference after this year, learned Tuesday that Willard is entertaining the possibility of moving to the NCC, Weidner said.
At the time of Fostoria's departure, the NOL's remaining schools will be Bellevue, Norwalk, Sandusky, Shelby, Tiffin Columbian and Willard. Six schools is considered less than optimum for scheduling purposes.
Fostoria joined the NOL in 2002 and has won two championships in both football and baseball and one in boys basketball.
The NOL formed in 1944 and is Ohio's third-oldest conference.
