BOWLING GREEN — Theft charges have been filed against two Elmwood boys accused of swindling money with fraudulent cancer stories.
Both boys were charged with a fifth-degree felony of theft and will continue their cases in Wood County Juvenile Court, said Prosecutor Paul Dobson.
One of the defendants is a 17-year-old student who planned the crime, Dobson said. He was joined by a 14-year-old accomplice, he said.
Investigators are still looking into how much money was taken from residents of Hancock and Wood counties, Dobson said. Findlay police have said they believe there are numerous victims in the region.
The charges stipulate one of the victims was an elderly resident, Dobson said.
One Findlay resident said an anxious boy in an Elmwood High School letter jacket appeared at his front door. The teenager spoke quickly about raising money for a fellow student and did not carry any forms, he said.
Courier reporter Ryan Dunn will have more in Thursday’s newspaper.
