Plans for Taylor Volkswagen dealership approved

Construction of a Taylor Volkswagen dealership will start soon at the southeast corner of Hancock County 99 and Speedway Drive. It will likely open in early 2015, Taylor Automotive General Manager Steve Taylor said Thursday.

Plans for the $5-million, 25,000-square-foot building with offices, showroom, service and parts departments were approved Thursday by Findlay City Planning Commission. Taylor will employ 25 to 30 at the dealership.

“We are itching to break ground and get going,” Taylor said. “We think there’s pretty good demand for Volkswagen in Findlay.”

He is hoping to sell 100 new and used cars per month. With 9.5 acres at his site, he has room to expand the dealership eventually, he said.

Taylor a year ago had been considering building the dealership at the former site of Imperial House Motel, 1305 W. Main Cross St. The hotel was demolished in 2008, and the site just southeast of the Interstate 75-Ohio 12 interchange is barren. But he had to give up on that site when it turned out it had less space than it initially appeared. The state has right of way claims which it may use for a planned Interstate 75 widening.

The Volkswagen dealership will be Taylor’s third dealership in Findlay, joining Taylor Hyundai at 15199 U.S. 224 East, and Taylor Kia at 12002 Hancock County 99, northeast of the Speedway Drive site.

Taylor Automotive bought the Hyundai property and franchise in 2012 from Tom Ahl. It opened the Kia dealership in 2010. It also owns Cadillac and Kia dealerships in Toledo, a Hyundai franchise in Perrysburg and a Kia franchise in Lima.
