Woman killed in U.S. 23 accident

UPPER SANDUSKY — A Bucyrus woman was killed Wednesday evening on U.S. 23 near Upper Sandusky when she was struck by a pickup truck while attempting to get something out of the trunk of her vehicle.
Stephanie J. Cowgill, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene by Wyandot County Coroner Joseph Sberna.
According to the Wyandot County Sheriff’s Office, Cowgill had pulled off the edge of the southbound entrance ramp to U.S. 23 from Ohio 199 at about 6:32 p.m. to retrieve an item from the trunk of her 2000 Chevy Lumina. A 2006 Ford F-250, driven by Wade K. Gottfried, 29, of Nevada, was driving east on the same entrance ramp when his vehicle went right of the white line marking lanes of travel, striking Cowgill and the right side of her Lumina, the sheriff’s office reported.
According to the sheriff’s office, Cowgill’s two children and three dogs who were inside her vehicle were not injured. Gottfried also was not injured.
The sheriff’s office was assisted by the Upper Sandusky Police Department, Wyandot County Emergency Medical Service and the Upper Sandusky Fire Department.
The accident remains under investigation.
