BOWLING GREEN — After an exhaustive air and ground search, law enforcement officials have captured the man wanted for robbing a pharmacy on the campus of Wood County Hospital this morning.
Police have identified the suspect as Matthew Stoughton, 26, of 611 N. Prospect St., Bowling Green. Stoughton was taken into custody by officials just before 6 p.m. in eastern Wood County.
The robbery occurred this morning at Jaks Pharmacy, 970 W Wooster St., according to police reports. Police said the suspect entered the pharmacy, showed a gun and demanded morphine.
Stoughton was known as a regular customer of the pharmacy, according to Deputy Chief Tony Hetrick of the Bowling Green Police Department.
After the robbery, Stoughton’s vehicle was located by police at his residence. Police were attempting to obtain a search warrant when Stoughton left his residence and drove away.
Police say he drove to eastern Wood County, sped north on U.S. 23 to the edge of Pemberville, then south on Bradner Road to Kahler Road. He eventually crashed the vehicle, and then fled on foot into a cornfield.
Law enforcement agencies surrounded the field and used dogs, an airplane and a helicopter to search the area. The search was called off at about 3:30 p.m. without the suspect being located. However, deputies remained in the area looking for Stoughton.
Stoughton was apprehended after authorities were notified by a citizen who saw a shirtless man in a ditch in that area.
