VAN WERT — One Ottoville student was killed and three others were injured just before 8 a.m. Monday morning in a crash on U.S. 224 near John Yoh Road in Van Wert County.
Jacob Guy, 17, was killed when Matthew Niemeyer, 18, drove his 2001 Pontiac Grand Am off the right side of the road and stuck a ditch and a telephone pole, according to the Van Wert post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Guy and another passenger, Christopher Mohr, 17, were both ejected from the car.
Guy was pronounced dead at the scene, and Mohr was flown via medical helicopter to St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima, according to the patrol. Niemeyer and a fourth passenger, Brandon Kimmet, 17, suffered non-life threatening injuries and were transported to Van Wert County Hospital.
According to a Lima News report, Ottoville Superintendent Scott Mangas said the four students were driving to Vantage Career Center, a vocational school in Van Wert, at the time of the accident. He said the four students were juniors or seniors.
None of occupants in the car were wearing seatbelts at the time of the accident, according to the patrol.
The patrol is continuing its investigation of the accident.
The Van Wert Fire Department, Van Wert County Sheriff’s Office, Lifeflight, Scott Fire and Scott Emergency Medical Service and Knippens Towing all assisted at the scene.
