Shots fired after Putnam County Sheriff’s deputy responds to welfare check

An early morning shooting incident remains under investigation near Leipsic.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office says a deputy responded to a home at 4384 Road H just after 12:30 a.m. for a welfare check. When the deputy went to the front door, someone in the home fired a shot. The deputy retreated and called for help. The person fired a second shot a short time later. The shots did not hit anyone.

After six minutes the person in the home came outside unarmed. The suspect said they didn’t know who was at the door and had no intention to hurt law enforcement.

The sheriff’s office is not publicly identifying the resident of the home. Family members took the person for an evaluation.

The Leipsic and Ottawa police departments assisted at the scene.
