Former University of Findlay president DeBow Freed has been selected to receive Camp Fire of Northwest Ohio’s On Behalf of Youth Award, the organization’s highest award for service to youth.
He will be recognized during Camp Fire’s annual On Behalf of Youth luncheon May 13 at Winebrenner Theological Seminary. The luncheon will also serve to recognize seven area youth as “Absolutely Incredible Kids,” an annual recognition of some of the outstanding young people in the community.
Freed served as president of the University of Findlay from 2003 to 2010. He was president of Ohio Northern University from 1979 to 1999. Prior to that he was president of Monmouth College, dean of Mount Union College and an associate professor of physics at West Point. In addition, he served for 23 years as an active-duty U.S. Army officer, including assignments in Japan, Germany, Iran, Korea, and Vietnam.
Freed was included in the 2013 inaugural edition of “West Point Leadership: Profiles in Courage.” The book includes profiles of 180 of the more than 67,000 graduates of West Point since its founding in 1802. Freed is one of only five educators recognized for their service and achievements.
The “Absolutely Incredible Kids” honor puts the spotlight on the many positive things that youth are doing to make society better. Each recipient will receive a citation and a $250 check.
Youth will be honored in the following categories: Youth Development, Talents and Skills, Leadership/Community Service, Family Development, Nature, Advocacy, and Diversity. Descriptions of each category and nomination forms can be found on the Camp Fire website (www.campfirenwohio.com). The nomination deadline is Jan. 31.
The May 13 luncheon will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the seminary, 950 N. Main St. Tickets are $35 each and are available by contacting Camp Fire Northwest Ohio, 305 W. Hardin St., Findlay, Ohio 45840; 419-422-5415. Sponsorship opportunities are available.
