Scholarships offered for middle school girls’ camps

The American Association of University Women, Findlay Branch, is offering a limited number of scholarships for middle school girls to attend math and science camps this summer.
Opportunities are available for girls who will be in grades seven and eight next year who are college bound and have a strong interest in exploring math and science in a college campus setting.
Be Wise Camp, sponsored by the Ohio region of the American Association of University Women, is a six-day residential mathematics and science camp for 130 middle school girls. It will take place from June 15-20 at Denison University in Granville.
The camp offers curricula for girls at an average of 10 students per teacher. Camp fees are $490 including board, room and educational materials. More information is at www.bewisecamp.org.
Camp GEMS (Girls in Engineering, Math and Science) is a four-day residential engineering, mathematics and science camp for 72 young women to be held from July 13-16 at Ohio Northern University in Ada. The camp, sponsored by the Lima Branch of the American Association of University Women and the Ohio Northern University College of Engineering for the 19th year, features activities in math, science and computers with an engineering focus. Class size is 12 students per ONU faculty member. Camp fees of $300 cover board, room and educational materials.
Both camps are designed to expand math and science career expectations and options, to develop critical thinking skills and to promote excitement and self-confidence with respect to studying math and science. The Findlay Branch of AAUW will select a limited number of girls to represent the branch at each camp. Transportation to and from either camp is not included or provided.
