Library to administer adult literacy program

A nonprofit organization that helps adults with literacy skills is getting new life through the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library.
The library has assumed administration of Read for Life, which provides reading instruction for adults who are unable to read or have limited reading ability.
“We’re really excited about it. I think it fits our mission very, very well,” said Jeff Winkle, library director.
Winkle said the decision for the library to absorb the Read for Life program only made sense once a consultant pointed out that the Read for Life director spent more than half her time on fundraising efforts, most of which funded her own salary. The consultant was provided through the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation’s Schneider Circle program, which aims to strengthen nonprofit agencies.
The library has long been a supporter of the Read for Life program, providing office space in its lower level for many years. Other than the director’s salary, Read for Life’s only expenses are for textbooks and other reading materials, Winkle said.
Kristy Szkudlark, Read for Life’s interim director, has been hired as the Read for Life administrator.
For now, the library will support the program through its endowment fund and general fund. However, Winkle said it is hoped that the Read for Life fund at the Community Foundation can grow to sustain the program going forward. Supporters have been asked to consider contributions to the Read for Life fund so that it can move from a seed fund to an endowed fund. Contributions must be received before the Read for Life fund is dissolved and transferred into the Community Foundation’s general endowment.
Over the summer, the Read for Life board worked to dissolve the organization as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Read for Life’s annual fundraisers, a spelling bee and a purse bingo event, will be discontinued, although Winkle said he expects another agency may pick up the spelling bee.
Contributions may be sent to the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library Read for Life Fund, c/o the Findlay-Hancock County Community Foundation, 101 W. Sandusky St., Suite 101, Findlay, OH 45840.
