The Ohio State University Extension will offer a Master Gardener classes Feb. 2 through March 29. Classes will meet from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. every Tuesday at the Hancock County Agricultural Service Center, 7868 Hancock County 140. After completing the training, each participant will have received 50 hours of education on topics such as soils, fertilizers, botany, entomology, plant pathology, vegetable gardening, fruit production, annuals and perennials for the landscape, herbs, and other horticultural subjects. A $150 fee will be charged to cover the cost of instruction, Master Gardener manual and handouts. Sessions will be taught by horticultural experts from the Ohio State University Extension. Registrants will be accepted on a first-come first-served basis. Those planning to attend must obtain a registration packet by contacting Bill Jones at 419-722-8149 or wcjones@bright.net; or the Ohio State University Hancock County Extension office at 419-422-3851 or lentz.38@osu.edu. BLUFFTON — Kathy DeBoer, executive director of the American Volleyball Coaches Association, will speak on “Gender and Competition: Discussing and Dealing with Difference” at 11 a.m. Feb. 2 in Yoder Recital Hall at Bluffton University. She will discuss the potential problems that can arise through the well-intentioned desire to avoid stereotypes. DeBoer become executive director in 2006 after serving 23 years in intercollegiate athletics as a coach, administrator and fundraiser. She also spent 18 years as the head volleyball coach at the University of Kentucky.

Judging of photos will be based on content, technical quality, composition and originality. Mounting neatness will also be considered. Photographers are required to obtain written permission if they use people in their photos. A copy of the written permission is required at the time of entry submission. The public is welcome to vote for their favorite photos for the People’s Choice Awards during the open house. All votes are required to be completed by 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 7. An awards ceremony for the contest winners will take place at 3 p.m. During the ceremony, ribbons and awards will be given to the winners for youth and adult first through third, Best in Show, People’s Choice Awards and honorable mention. At this workshop, you will explore Story Dramas and build strategies used in bringing stories to life in your classroom. Build your toolbox of constructive ways to use drama to engage students in learning through areas of the curriculum including language arts, social studies, and the arts. Recommended for teachers of K-8 Meriah Sage has been active in the field of theater education and arts integration for over 15 years. Meriah currently teaches Arts Integration, Drama in Education and Theater at Ohio Northern University, Eastern Michigan University and Bluffton University. Meriah has served as education director at The Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University in Chicago, IL and the education director and artistic director of theater for young audiences for Apple Tree Theatre.

The Findlay Police Department and the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office are joining together to bring “Coffee with a Cop” to the area. The first “Coffee with a Cop” will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at Coffee Amici, 328 S. Main St. Findlay and Hancock County residents are being invited to attend. “Coffee with a Cop” is a nationwide initiative aimed at bringing law enforcement officers and citizens together to discuss community concerns over coffee in an informal setting. This also allows officers and community members an opportunity to learn more about each other. There is no set agenda or specific topic. Community members may have concerns, but don’t feel they warrant police involvement. Sometimes, community members wish to offer a compliment or voice a complaint, or want to learn about police procedures and operations.

50 North will host a new program, S20 — Seniors Singing Out, from 1:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Thursdays. Seniors are invited to share their voices in a variety of musical styles and themes. Performance opportunities will be available with seasonal concerts. No memorization is required. The group is directed by Celia Stockton. There is no charge to participate.

WholyFit Devotional Exercise Workshop @ Findlay Evangelical Free Church

A free workshop in WholyFit devotional exercise will be offered Feb. 27 at Findlay Evangelical Free Church, 2515 Heatherwood Drive. The event also serves as a fundraiser for Hope House. Two sessions will be held. Session one, from 8:45 a.m. to 10:25 a.m., will feature devotional exercise. Session two, from 10:25 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., will include devotional time and biblical stress management and meditation. Participants can stay for both sessions or attend only one. Those attending should bring an exercise mat or a large beach towel. There will be raffle drawings. There is no cost for the workshop but donations will be accepted for Hope House. The workshop will be led by Karin Johnson, a certified WholyFit trainer. For more information, or to pre-order a T-shirt, contact Johnson at karinjohnson@wholyfit.org.
