A Red Tie men’s heart health event will be held Feb. 1 at Blanchard Valley Hospital’s Marathon Auditorium. A breakfast buffet will be served at 7 a.m., followed by a heart health program at 7:30 with Dr. William Kose, honorary Red Tie spokesman, and the Heminger Heart Care Center medical team. Those attending will learn what they can do to help improve their heart health. Men are also encouraged to wear red on Feb. 3. The event is open to all men. Reservations are required by Jan. 27 by emailing tmike@bvhealthsystem.org.

Scheduled for the first Thursday of each month visit the Hancock Historical Museum for a variety of informative and educational presentations on a wide range of topics relevant to Findlay and Hancock County Ohio. Lunches from Main St. Deli are available for purchase for an additional $5.50. Lunches include sandwich, chips, cookie and drink.

Julie Friesen, director of programs at Community Justice Initiatives in Kitchener, Ontario, Canada, will speak about “The Elmira Case Film” at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 7, in Yoder Recital Hall at Bluffton University. She will discuss a documentary film about how a drunken rampage in 1974 in Elmira, Ontario, helped to launch the worldwide restorative justice movement and also began her agency’s work in restorative justice. The event is free.

Child care professionals can take part in a series of free professional development workshops in Findlay, offered by WBGU-TV through a grant from the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Each workshop is approved for contact hours and is Ohio and Step-Up approved. The workshops will be held starting Tuesday at Marilyn’s Life Long Learning Center, 15100 Birchaven. The first workshop, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor? Supporting Social and Emotional Development,” will be held from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday. It will focus on strategies to build positive relationships with young children and help them cope with separation anxiety from familiar adults. The second workshop, from 6:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Feb. 21, will be “1,2,3 Count with Me: Building Math Skills through Play with Preschoolers.” The third workshop, “ABCs of Getting Ready to Read: Supporting Emergent Literacy,” will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. March 2. Cover crops, their benefits and which ones are right for a particular farmer’s needs, will be discussed from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Feb. 10 at Plaza Inn Restaurant, Mount Victory. The Northwest Ohio Beekeeping Association will hold a beginning beekeeping workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Ohio State University at Lima, Life and Physical Sciences Building, room 100. The workshop is designed for people who would like to get started in beekeeping or those who have had previous beekeeping experience and want to get back into the practice. Topics covered will include basic honeybee biology, races of bees, how to start a hive, equipment and keeping bees in a residential setting. The cost is $30 and includes membership in the beekeeping association and a book.
