Spring canoe trip 7:00 am

Canoeists will begin the trip by paddling through Blanchard River Nature Preserve and later along the border of parks, conservation areas, and Riverbend Recreation Area and through an especially scenic section west of the park. It is an enjoyable, yet long day trip at 25 miles. Canoeists should plan on portaging two dams near the latter part of the trip — one near the Findlay reservoir and one after the covered bridge on Township 241 near Riverbend Recreation Area. Without stops and with two strong paddlers, this trip should take approximately 8½ hours. If the trip is canceled due to extreme inclement weather, it will be rescheduled for Sunday, April 19. Meet at 7 a.m. at Zonta Landing parking area at Riverside Park, located on McManness Avenue, north of East Main Cross Street between the swimming pool and river. The shuttle will be at Zonta Landing parking area at Riverside Park at 7 a.m. Canoeists will be transported to Blanchard River Nature Preserve via the HPD Shuttle Service. Adults and youth age 15 to 17 with a signed assumption of risk/liability release/waiver of all claims form and/or parental consent form. Youth under the age of 15 are welcome to participate if accompanied by an adult age 18 or older. Participants must have the ability to swim. Enrollment maximum: 12 people total with a maximum of two participants per canoe. Register by Friday, April 17 at 4:30 p.m. Supplies: Wear tennis shoes that can get wet. Bring lunch, snacks, and water or Gatorade in a small cooler (alcohol is not permitted in HPD canoes). Dress and plan accordingly for the weather. Canoes, life vests, paddles, and shuttle service will be provided.

Canoeists will begin the trip by paddling through downtown Findlay and the obstacle-ridden section of the Blanchard River. Beyond the urban section lies a scenic and pleasant rural section where wildlife sightings are commonplace. It is an enjoyable, yet physically challenging trip at 12.6 miles with up to six potential portages around two dams and four rock fields, including a long portage at the waterfall just after starting the trip. Without stops and with two strong paddlers, this trip should take approximately 4½ hours. If the trip is canceled due to extreme inclement weather, it will be rescheduled for Sunday, April 26. Meet at 9 a.m. at Blanchard Landing, located on Ohio 235, south of U.S. 224 West. The shuttle will be at Blanchard Landing at 9 a.m. Canoeists will be transported to Zonta Landing at Riverside Park via the HPD Shuttle Service.
