The annual Maple Sugarin’ program, presented by Hancock Park District staff, will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 14 at Litzenberg Memorial Woods, west of Findlay on U.S. 224. Maple trees will be tapped and the process used by pioneers and Native Americans to collect sap, transport it to the sugar bush and boil it down to produce maple syrup will be discussed. There will be stops along the trail for presentations on sap science and sap-loving animals. There also will be a stop at the McKinnis House. There will be a story presented in the shelter, and visitors can make a beaded keychain to represent the steps in making maple syrup. There will be refreshments available in the activity barn for a donation, and maple syrup products will be available to purchase, provided by Fruth’s Sugarhouse, Vanlue. Prior to the program, an “all you can eat” pancake breakfast will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the activity barn. Registration is required for the breakfast by March 12. Cost is $4 each for individuals at least 13 years old, and $2 each for 5- to 12-year-olds. Children 4 and under will be admitted free. Pancakes, sausage, juice and coffee will be available. Get ready for a truly immersive reading experience! A staff member from the Toledo Zoo will visit the Children’s Museum to read a story. After reading the book, students will learn more about the animals that starred in it by exploring bio-facts and meeting an animal from the story!
