Humane Society Golf Outing and Mutt Strut @ Red Hawk Run Golf Club
May 6 @ 8:00 am
Golf carts and tees will meet leashes and puppies this May as the local humane society teams up with a Findlay golf course. While dogs are not typically welcome guests on golf course greens, Red Hawk Run Golf Club is willing to make an exception for the Humane Society & SPCA of Hancock County’s largest fundraiser of the year. According to Greg Meyers, chairman of this year’s Humane Society Golf Outing and Mutt Strut, the dog-walking event was added to the annual golf classic as a way of appealing to those who may not be interested in playing golf. The 2.5-mile Mutt Strut will afford walkers and their furry friends a chance to enjoy the beauty of the course, but is also open to walkers without pups in tow. Meyers notes golf courses are rarely opened to non-golfers, and certainly tend to dissuade the presence of dogs. “I was a little bit surprised that Jim Cook (who helps manage Red Hawk Run) and his crew went along with it,” he said of the idea. “We’ll have volunteers that make sure that anything that’s left by the dogs is picked up.” The May 6 event marks the golf classic’s seventh year, and Meyers said about $19,000 was raised last year. Funds go to the shelter for general upkeep, medical needs, food and more. The Mutt Strut begins at 8 a.m., with registration at 7:30. The golf classic begins at 11 a.m., and a “Yappy Hour” will be held from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. To register or for more information, visit hancockhumanesociety.com or call 419-423-1664.
