Millstream Astronomy Club — Mercury @ Riverbend Recreation Area - Shelter 5
Sep 23 @ 8:00 pm

Doug Rider, with Millstream Astronomy Club, will present a program about Mercury, the closest planet to the sun, at 8 p.m. Saturday in Shelter 5 at Riverbend Recreation Area.

After the program, telescopes will be available, or participants may bring one, to view the moon, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn.

The free family program requires no registration.

Wee Ones: River Otters @ Discovery Center at Oakwoods Nature Preserve
Sep 25 @ 10:00 am – 2:00 pm

A program for toddlers about river otters will be presented by Hancock Park District staff at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday in the Discovery Center at Oakwoods Nature Preserve.

The same program will be offered each time.

The Wee Ones program, for 3-year-old and younger toddlers accompanied by an adult, will include a story, activities and a craft. Siblings may attend.

The program is free and requires no registration.

Punkin’ Chunkin’ Archery Challenge @ Oakwoods Nature Preserve, Dold Lake

Pumpkin season has finally arrived. To celebrate, participants will test their archery skills in a different way by using pumpkins as targets. Cider and donuts will be included. Participants must have attended an HPD introductory archery session prior to this event and must use HPD archery equipment.

Age: Required to be ages 9 and up

Admission: Register with $13 per person by 4 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29. An adult must accompany children ages 15 and under.

Capacity: Maximum of 10 participants

Pioneer Program for Preschoolers @ Litzenberg Memorial Woods

A pioneer program for preschoolers will be held at Litzenberg Memorial Woods at 10 a.m. or 1 p.m. Oct. 2. The same program will be offered each time.

Hikers will meet at the gatehouse before touring the 1847 McKinnis homestead and few some jobs pioneers did during the fall. Hands-on activities include grinding corn, pressing apples, churning butter and checking the garden for what is ready to harvest. After each stop, hikers will receive a sample.

The free program is recommended for children 3-6 years old with an adult. Siblings may attend.

Putnam County Extension Master Gardener Program @ Putnam County OSU Extension Office

The Putnam County Extension office this year will be offering the Master Gardener training program, which provides intensive training in horticulture to interested gardeners who then volunteer their time assisting with educational programs and activities.

Specialists from the Ohio State University will be teaching sessions along with some local experts. Topics will include botany, plant selection, landscaping with annuals and perennials, vegetable gardening, tree selection and identification, fruit tree care, pesticides, soils, and plant and insect identification.

Classes will begin Oct. 3 and will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on consecutive Tuesdays through Nov. 21. The course fee is $125 per person or $150 per couple. Classes will be held at the Putnam County Extension office, 1206 E. Second St., Ottawa.

Aiming for Archery @ Oakwoods Nature Preserve, Dold Lake
Oct 21 @ 8:30 am – 12:00 pm

Participants will learn how to properly stand, hold and shoot a bow to hit a bullseye. After some practicing, games will be played. This program will be led by a certified archery instructor.

Time: 8:30 to 10 a.m. for ages 10 to 14
10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. for ages 15 to 17

Admission: Register with $10 per child by 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 20. A medical form is required and available online or at the park office.
