Bluffton American Legion to observe Religious Emphasis Week

BLUFFTON — Bluffton American Legion Post 382 will observe the American Legion’s Religious Emphasis Week, which is observed Feb. 2-8, by attending the 9 a.m. service Sunday at English Lutheran Church, 111 Grove St., Bluffton.
All veterans and Legion members are welcome to attend and asked to arrive at 8:45 a.m.
The week commemorates the 71st anniversary of the sinking of the USS Dorchester during World War II and the sacrifice of four armed forces chaplains.
The chaplains — a Jewish rabbi, a Roman Catholic priest and two Protestant ministers — issued life belts to American servicemen aboard the troop transport after it was torpedoed Feb. 3, 1943. When the supply of life preservers was exhausted, the four chaplains removed their own belts and gave them to four soldiers and then stood on the sinking ship, their arms around one another’s shoulders and their heads bowed in prayer.
The American Legion marks the anniversary of their sacrifice each year through services and programs across the country.
