NAMI to attempt world record during Balloon Fest

The National Alliance on Mental Illness of Hancock County will attempt to break a Guinness World Record during the Flag City Balloon Fest Aug. 9.
Visitors to the balloon festival will be asked to simultaneously break a glow stick for NAMI’s “I Don’t Give a Snap About Stigma” campaign. The campaign seeks to support the agency’s mission to bring mental health awareness and to reduce stigma associated with mental illness.
The glow sticks will be distributed free of charge behind the NAMI tent on the Marathon Soccer Field. After the evening’s balloon glow, at approximately 9:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., everyone in the area will be asked to wait for a signal to snap the glow sticks in unison.
A goal has been set for 3,000 participants but there will be 5,000 glow sticks available. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the current record is 836 and was achieved in Los Angeles on Nov. 15, 2013.
