FHS senior coordinates wreath laying at Maple Grove Cemetery

Findlay High School senior Jon Brumbaugh is coordinating the second annual veterans wreath laying at Findlay’s Maple Grove Cemetery, in conjunction with the national Wreaths Across America event, for 10 a.m. Dec. 16.

Wreaths Across America is a national event whose mission is to remember fallen American veterans. Thanks to Jon’s efforts, Maple Grove will be one of about 1,000 U.S. cemeteries participating in the observation.

In 2016, Jon chose the coordination of this local event for his Eagle Scout project.

“Being able to bring this event to Findlay last year was humbling. Seeing the impact of laying the wreaths and feeling the emotion of the volunteers was something I was proud to be a part of. I’d like to continue to make this an annual event and really honor the sacrifices of our local veterans,” Jon said.

In order to raise the necessary funds for this project, Jon worked with Garner Trucking to promote and coordinate the second annual “Ride to Remember,” which raised over $4,000. Additional donations from local business, corporations and veterans’ groups helped support the project, although more donations are needed.

Last year, wreaths were purchased and laid on 400 veterans’ graves. With the number of veteran graves at Maple Grove Cemetery nearing 4,500, project leaders hope to continue to raise funds and increase the number of wreaths to be laid this year.

Anyone interested in assisting with the wreath laying at Maple Grove Cemetery is asked to arrive prior to the beginning of the 10 a.m. ceremony, which will include presentations from local, state and federal dignitaries, a Color Guard and a moment of prayer. A brief instruction on the proper laying of wreaths for fallen soldiers will follow.

Anyone interested in volunteering or donating as a wreath sponsor can contact Jon at 567-525-6791 or email hancock.waa@gmail.com.
