Beth Genson Art Exhibit Reception @ Fisher/Wall Art Gallery, Marathon Center for the Performing Arts

Beth Genson’s works in the ancient art of encaustic use a hot paint mixture of beeswax, damar resin and oil pigments. Genson finds the encaustic medium well suited for her exploration of water as a subject matter, with rivers and ponds as the focal point of many of her paintings. The public is invited to an artist’s reception from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19.

Hours: 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays.

Wellness Wednesdays @ Lindamood Room at the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library

Wellness Wednesdays, in partnership with Blanchard Valley Health System, will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Lindamood Room at the Findlay-Hancock County Public Library.

Information on HPV vaccinations, preventable cancers and colon cancer prevention will be presented by Brianne Hottinger, oncology nurse navigator.

A Matter of Balance @ 50 North

Falling is a real fear for many senior citizens, but a program of the Area Agency on Aging 3 is looking to help with that.

An eight-week class titled “A Matter of Balance” educates seniors on how to make changes to their home and their lifestyle to help reduce the risk of falls. Exercises to increase strength and balance are also taught.

Facilitator Dancie Mohler is a health education coordinator for the agency on aging and has been involved with the program for eight years.

The evidence-based program was created by Boston University’s Roybal Center in Applied Gerontology and the New England Research Institutes with funding from the National Institute on Aging.

The first class at 50 North was held Sept. 6. Sessions continue from 1-3 p.m. every Thursday through Oct. 25.

Mohler also explained that falling leads to the fear of falling, which leads to more falls. “A Matter of Balance” is designed to help combat that fear and the hesitancy that goes along with it, she said.

Session 2 this Thursday will include a discussion on thoughts and concerns about falling. Participants will hopefully feel comfortable enough to open up about their experiences, their challenges and their successes, said Mohler.

Exercises start the third week of the program and will include shoulder rolls, foot circles, seated leg extensions and knee raises, toe stands, alternating steps, side steps, finger spreads, elbow touches and stretches.

Some people may not want to continue with the series due to the exercises, Mohler predicted. She anticipates that some will be embarrassed because they can’t move like they did when they were younger.

The fourth session Sept. 27 will focus on assertiveness and fall prevention, while the session on Oct. 5 will look at managing concerns about falling. A representative from the Findlay Fire Department will talk to the group about what emergency responders do when a Life Alert button is pushed.

For the sixth session on Oct. 11, participants will be asked to look for risks inside their homes.

Class members will talk about those results at the seventh session on Oct. 18. Mohler also hopes to bring someone in to talk about the various types of safety equipment on the market.

Graduation day is set for Oct. 25.

The class but free, but anyone interested must come this week or they will not be able to attend Sept. 20 when exercises are introduced for the first time. For more information, call 50 North at 419-423-8496.

Delay the Disease @ Mennonite Memorial Home

Individuals diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease or other movement disorders are encouraged to attend free “Delay the Disease” exercise classes at Mennonite Memorial Home, 410 W. Elm St., Bluffton.

Classes are held from 1-2 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays in the chapel and can accommodate those in wheelchairs.

Developed by Ohio Health, the program can help participants move about with ease and confidence in a crowd, get out of bed or rise from a chair independently, improve handwriting, dress independently and regain a sense of moving with normality. A physician referral is required and, if falling has been an issue, a participant must be accompanied by someone during the classes.

Grand Love @ McComb School Library

A support group for grandparents raising their grandkids and other children affected by addiction is forming in McComb.

Grand Love, a program sponsored by the Family Resource Center of Northwest Ohio, premiered in Findlay last May. McComb organizer Deb Ewing said formation of the rural version has been in the works for the past year, with its first meeting set for Jan. 18.

Meetings are open to people living in McComb and the surrounding area and will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. every Thursday in the McComb school library (enter through north front door #2). Meetings will be facilitated by Family Resource Center professionals, with an emphasis on peer support. Registration is not required, although those bringing kids are encouraged to call ahead so arrangements to provide child care can be made.

Crafting Through the Seasons

The Findlay Leo Councilettes will host a craft retreat titled “Crafting Through the Seasons” on Sept. 21-22.

The $25 cost includes a weekend of knitting, quilting, crocheting, scrapbooking, reading and more. Door prizes, raffles and table favors, along with lunch, are included.

SMART Recovery Meeting @ Focus on Friends

Focus on Friends now offers a SMART Recovery (Self-Management and Recovery Training) group led by a trained facilitator.

The group meets at 3 p.m. each Friday at 509 W. Trenton Ave., and no registration is needed.
SMART Recovery is a nonprofit international organization that provides science-based, self-empowering support groups for abstaining from addiction. The program uses techniques drawn primarily from cognitive behavior therapy and motivational interviewing.

The SMART Recovery program is under continuous revision, and changes as scientific knowledge about addiction treatment and recovery evolves. It is reviewed by both practicing addiction treatment professionals, who volunteer as advisers to the organization, and the International Advisory Council, which includes many of the world’s leading addiction scientists.
