Monthly Classic Movie Night: “African Queen” @ Hancock Historical Museum

The Hancock Historical Museum, 422 W. Sandusky St., will host its monthly classic movie night at 7 p.m. Friday with a screening of “African Queen.”

Starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn, the film was nominated for four Academy Awards in 1952; Humphrey Bogart was awarded Best Actor in a Leading Role.

The event is free, and refreshments will be provided.

Swiss Homestead Open House @ Swiss Homestead

The Swiss Homestead at 8350 Bixel Road, Bluffton, will be open to the public from 1-5 p.m. every Saturday through August.

Areas open to visitors will include the restored 1843 house; reconstructed summer kitchen; restored workshop; 1850s kitchen garden; an outdoor bake oven; and extensive grounds. Docents will be available to interpret the homestead’s history each weekend.

The 1854 barn will be open the last Saturday of each month only. Special activities will take place the second Saturday of each month: June 9 — making butter in the summer kitchen; July 14 — children’s games; Aug. 11 — working with tools in the workshop.

Admission is $5 for adults and free for children 16 and younger and members of the Swiss Community Historical Society.

Johnson Island Civil War Roundtable @ American Civil War Mueseum of Tiffin

The Johnson Island Civil War Roundtable of Tiffin welcomes re-enactor Raylene Hlavaty, portraying Margaret Junkin Preston, during its 7 p.m. meeting at the American Civil War Mueseum of Tiffin on Sunday.

Preston grew up in the North, married a Southerner, lived with the “lost cause,” and wrote poems about the trials of the war even after 1865. Her book “Beechenbrook: A Rhyme of the War” can be read online. The book was beloved thoughout the South.
