Military Service Informational Meeting @ Education Center Conference Room 111, Owens Community College -- Findlay Campus

High school students and their parents can obtain information about United States military service academy nominations and the appointment process in a meeting at 7 p.m. Sept. 19 at Owens Community College — Findlay Campus.

The meeting, to be in Education Center Conference Room 111, will be held by U.S. Rep. Bob Latta, R-Bowling Green.

At the meeting, potential service academy candidates will be advised of the congressional nomination process and have the opportunity to meet with representatives from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York; U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland; U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado; and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. Potential candidates may also obtain an application for a military service academy nomination at the meeting. Applications and additional information are available on Latta’s website at https://latta.house.gov/constituentservices/serviceacademynominations.htm

Applications will be due Oct. 1, 2018.

Carey Freewill Baptist Church Autumn Dinner and Bake Sale @ Carey Freewill Baptist Church

Carey Freewill Baptist Church will host its Autumn Dinner and Bake Sale from 3:30-6:30 p.m. Sept. 21 at the church, two miles north of Carey on U.S. 23 N. The meal consists of a half-barbecue chicken or two pork chops with au gratin potatoes, green beans, dinner roll, dessert and drink. Cost is $8.50, and orders must be placed by Sept. 14. Jones Mansion Autumn Garden Luncheon @ The Jones Mansion

The Jones Mansion will host a luncheon with locally harvested food straight from the garden. Guests can sample delicacies like dilly beans, sorrel soup, pickled beets, refrigerator pickles, zucchini sweets and more. Fresh lemonade and switchel will also be served. The program includes a short history of canning, complete with additional samples. Tickets are limited, with proceeds going to the mansion’s upkeep and restoration.

Van Buren United Methodist Church Pre-Game Tailgate @ Van Buren United Methodist Church

Van Buren United Methodist Church will host a pregame tailgate party before home football games, from 5-7 p.m. This replaces the “5th Quarter” hosted by the church in the past. Families are invited to come for free food and games, including hot dogs, walking tacos and desserts. Home games are scheduled for Sept. 14 and 28 and Oct. 26. The church is located within walking distance of the football field and is “Home of the 9 Square.”

The free, one-hour courses, offered from 6 to 7 p.m., are open to any UF student who would like to learn more about things that can come in handy outside of academia and work, such as preparing a nutritious meal and de-stressing techniques.

Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion’s Malcolm Dining Room; Nov. 14, yoga, Endly Room; Dec. 5, sewing and laundry, Endly Room; Jan. 9, meal preparation, Endly Room; Feb. 13, self-defense, Endly Room; March 13, interviewing strategies, Endly Room; April 10, dinner etiquette, Malcolm Dining Room.

Proceeds to be used for new LED lighting, security cameras and updates to the preschool area.

Putnam County Veteran of the Year Recognition Dinner @ Fogle Center

The Veterans Service Commission of Putnam County will host the third annual Putnam County Veteran of the Year Recognition Dinner at 6 p.m. Oct. 20 at the Fogle Center, 815 E. Mathias St., Leipsic.

Nomination forms can be picked up at the veterans office, 336 E. Main St., Ottawa, or can be received by mail by contacting the office at 419-523-4478. Forms are due by 4 p.m. Tuesday.

The event will also recognize in-county Vietnam veterans.

Tickets are available in advance only. Call the above phone number for tickets or to be honored as a Vietnam veteran during the event.
