Crow Family Adoption Fund Garage Sale @ 1640 Forest Park, Findlay
May 3 @ 8:00 am – 3:00 pm

A spring garage sale will help facilitate a local family’s adoption of a 14-year-old boy from a Ukrainian orphanage.

Lorie Crow said she and her family need to raise a minimum of $35,000 to bring Nazarii from an orphanage in Kiev, Ukraine, to their home in Findlay.

The garage sale will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday at the Crows’ residence, 1640 Forest Park. Home decor, kitchen items, kids’ clothing and toys, televisions, stereo equipment, Longaberger baskets and more will be offered at the sale.

Lorie and her husband, Matthew, partnered with a Christian nonprofit agency called Open Hearts and Homes for Children last fall. The organization works to find forever homes for orphans living in Latvia and the Ukraine, where Lorie explained children age out of orphanages at age 16. Often, she said the girls go on to become prostitutes and the boys enter a life of crime. Many don’t live to see their 30th birthday.

The adoption process will require Lorie and Matthew to travel to Kiev three times, where multiple court cases will take place. They’ll need to stay in the Ukraine for three full weeks during their first visit in order to obtain visas and see Nazarii through the completion of a medical exam.

Once the adoption process begins, any of Nazarii’s family members have 30 days to come forward and contest his adoption. Lorie has been assured this occurs in extremely rare cases only and pointed out the teen’s parents’ rights have been permanently terminated due to neglect.

The family has set up an online fundraising effort through YouCaring, which can be accessed at www.youcaring/crowadoptionfund by anyone who is “prayerfully considering being a part in giving this young man a home,” Lorie said. About 70 donors have raised just shy of $17,000 — half of the family’s declared goal.

Lorie is planning to build a large, framed puzzle as a gift for Nazarii, with each puzzle piece bearing the name of someone who contributed to his adoption effort. Anonymous donors will be represented with a Bible verse.
