Community Lenten Lunches @ North Baltimore
Feb 28 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

The churches of the North Baltimore Area Cooperative Ministry (NBACM) will host weekly “Community Lenten Lunches” on Wednesdays during Lent. Community members are invited to lunch and Lenten devotions from noon to 1 p.m. at a North Baltimore church.

The schedule is:

  • Ash Wednesday, Feb. 14, Holy Family Roman Catholic, 115 E. Cherry St.;
  • Feb. 21, Praise Chapel Pentecostal (location of meal: Church of the Good Shepherd, 119 W. Broadway St.);
  • Feb. 28, St. James United Methodist. 201 S. Second St.;
  • March 7, The Bridge Fellowship, 123 E. Broadway St.;
  • March 14, Church of the Good Shepherd;
  • March 21, St. Luke’s Lutheran, 215 N. Second St.

There is no cost for the meal, but participants are invited to give an offering for the ministries of NBACM including the “Community Food Pantry.”

 

Pandora UMC Community Meal @ Pandora United Methodist Church
Feb 28 @ 5:30 pm – 7:00 pm

A free community meal will be served from 5:30-7 p.m. Feb. 28 at Pandora United Methodist Church, 108 E. Washington St., Pandora.

This month’s meal is being provided by Hilty Memorial Home. The menu is fried chicken, parsley potatoes, California blend vegetables, assorted cupcakes and beverage.

Farmers’ Share Breakfast @ Brugeman Lodge at Riverbend Recreation Area

The annual Farmers’ Share Breakfast will be at 7:30 a.m. March 15 at Brugeman Lodge at Riverbend Recreation Area.

The main speaker will be the winner of the local Future Farmers of America public speaking contest.

In addition, 2018 inductees to the Hancock County Agricultural Hall of Fame will be recognized at the event, which is sponsored by the Agri-Business Committee of the Findlay-Hancock County Chamber of Commerce.

Tickets, available at the chamber office, cost $3 each, with a limit of 10 tickets per person.

Girton Church of God Cupcake Contest @ Risingsun Park shelter house

RISINGSUN — Girton Church of God is hosting a holy cupcake contest that could pay big dividends to the baker of the best little bite of cake.

The Risingsun church is looking for 30 people to enter the contest that could pay $10,000 for the tastiest cupcake. Entry fee is $30 and each contestant is asked to find 30 people or businesses to pay $30 apiece to sponsor the contestant.

A percentage of the $900 each contestant raises will go to support the church and to cover the payout for the top three contestants — $10,000 for first place, $2,500 for second place and $1,000 for third.

“This is our first year doing this and we plan to make it an annual event,” said Robin Hindall, church pastor. “Every church has their annual fundraisers, whether it be a spaghetti dinner or a fish fry. We’d like this to be ours.”

Hindall said 10 people have already signed up, leaving only 20 spots to round out the inaugural event.

All are invited to judge the cupcakes from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 24 at the Risingsun Park shelter house, 550 Salem St. Cost to be a judge is $3 at the door the day of the event, and all proceeds collected at the door will go to the Risingsun Police Department.

The contest rules are pretty straightforward:

  • No box mixes and no store-bought cupcakes may be submitted.
  • The contest is open to those 13 and older, but children under the age of 16 must have adult supervision
  • Contestants can work in teams or pairs, but they are responsible for divvying up any winnings.
  • Cupcakes must be prepared in a sanitary manner, must be completely baked and ready for judging, and must not need refrigeration.
  • Anyone who owns a baking business is not eligible to enter the contest.
  • Contestants are to submit one cupcake entry but provide enough cupcakes for judging.

Hindall estimates 30 cupcakes per contestant should be enough to provide each judge a tasty mouthful.

In addition to cupcakes, Hindall said there will be plenty of coffee and water to help wash it all down.

Winners will be announced at 3 p.m. the day of the contest. Winnings are subject to change depending on participation.

Hindall said the plan for contest day is to have the bakers on one side of the shelter house and their sponsors on the other.

Her best advice for bakers is “to have fun and enjoy being part of the community and helping the church and the police department.”
