Historic Barn Tour
Sep 16 @ 7:00 am – 4:00 pm
The Hancock Historical Museum will host its fourth Historic Barn Tour from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. The self-guided tour will showcase six historic barns in southern Hancock County, dating from the 1840s-1880s. Guests on the tour will learn the history of the barns and the farms they occupy. Many of the farms have been passed down in the same families for several generations. The barns display a wide array of timber-framing techniques and styles and have come to serve a variety of purposes. While some of the barns are being adaptively reused, others remain fully functional outbuildings on working farms. In addition to a wealth of historical information, guests will enjoy a day of activities promoting Hancock County heritage at each of the tour stops, including an antique machinery demonstrations, quilt show, local food vendors, hewing and timber framing demonstrations with JCM Timberworks, live music with Dulcimer Gatherin’ and the classic country band, East of Cheyenne. New this year, the museum will host a Breakfast in the Barn from 7-10 a.m., prior to the tour. The event will be held in the historic Glick-Etler barn in Jenera. Elaine Bruggeman, owner of the Main Street Deli, will prepare the meal. Food will be served buffet style in an open-house fashion. Tickets must be purchased in advance from the museum and are $10. Breakfast tickets are limited and must be purchased separately from the barn tour. Breakfast tickets are available at the museum or online. Tickets to the tour are available pre-sale for $10 at the museum and at the following sponsor locations: Findlay Implement Co., Reineke Ford in Findlay, Legacy Farmers’ Cooperative in Findlay, Citizen’s National Bank in Findlay and Bluffton, Ag Credit in Findlay, and The Alliance in Findlay. Tickets are available online at http://hancockhistoricalmuseum.org/events/historic-barn-tour/ and will also be available the day of the tour for $10 for museum members and $15 for nonmembers. The tour is self-guided and participants may start at any of the barns and proceed in any order. Children age 16 and younger will be admitted free. In 2015, nearly 700 people attended the tour. The previous year, the event was awarded the Public Education & Awareness Award by the Ohio State Historic Preservation Office for one of the best preservation programs in the state. For more information and a map of the tour stops, visit www.hancockhistoricalmuseum.org or call the museum at 419-423-4433.
