Winter sports center opens at Riverbend

Raccoon Run Winter Sports Center opened Friday at Riverbend Recreation Area and will be open Saturdays, Sundays and holidays while ground and weather conditions remain suitable.
The concession rents cross-country ski equipment and snowshoes. Rental fee is $7 per hour or $20 per day. Equipment is available on a first-come, first-served basis.
Arrangements for all-day rentals can be made at the Hancock Park District office, 1424 E. Main Cross St., during the week, or at the concession at Shelter 3 in the Big Oaks Area at Riverbend Recreation Area. The equipment may be taken to other park district properties.
Beginner cross-country ski workshops will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Saturdays in January and February, beginning today. Other dates include Jan. 11 and 18, and Feb. 1, 8 and 15.
A snowshoe workshop will be held at the same time Jan. 25. Workshops will be held with proper snow and weather conditions.
Workshop participants must be at least 8 years old and accompanied by a participating adult. Cost is $12 for cross-country and $10 for snowshoe workshops.
Workshop registration will be at the park district office, with fees paid by the Friday prior to the event.

To check current snow and trail conditions on weekends, call the center at 419-424-1555. During the week, from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, call the park district office at 419-425-7275.
