The Findlay-Hancock County Bar Association on Wednesday honored one of its members and filled leadership positions.
J. Michael Wilder received the Jackson E. Betts Professionalism Award. He serves as vice president, general counsel and secretary of Marathon Petroleum Corp.
“I’m very proud to be an attorney. I’m very proud to be part of this bar association,” Wilder said.
The award is given annually to a local attorney who demonstrates “uncommon dedication to the law in the preparation and thoroughness of his or her work, and in the conduct of his or her dealings with members of the judiciary, court personnel, fellow lawyers and/or clients.”
The award is named in honor of Betts, who served as a legislator in the Ohio House and in the U.S. House of Representatives.
The Library of Congress recently awarded Wilder its Legends in Law distinction.
Judge Kevin Smith was named president of the bar association for 2014. Elizabeth Candler will serve as president-elect and Douglas Melin as secretary-treasurer.
Membership in the bar association develops trust among area attorneys, Smith said.
“We get to respect each other, and that’s really important to our professional lives,” Smith said.
Smith said he hopes to increase public outreach this year through events such as mock trial and Law Day.
