A team from Perrysburg has advanced to the regional round of the 31st annual Ohio Mock Trial Competition on Feb. 21 after winning the Hancock County district contest.
The team is from Perrysburg Municipal Court Law & Government Explorer Post 2306.
The district competition, sponsored by the Findlay-Hancock County Bar Association, took place in Findlay Municipal Court. Magistrates Karen Elliott and Kristen Johnson were the presiding judges, and attorneys Valerie Roszman, Melissa LaRocco, Eric Figlewicz and Patrick Matheny were the scoring judges.
Each mock trial team consists of five to 11 students who prepare both plaintiff and defense cases and participate in two trials against opposing teams. Students assume the roles of witnesses and attorneys to present both sides of an original case based on a constitutional issue.
Teams that advance from regional competition will take part in the state contest March 6-8 in Columbus.
The state champion will advance to the National High School Mock Trial Championship May 8-10 in Madison, Wis.
The Ohio Mock Trial Program was established by the Ohio Center for Law-Related Education.
