Three Toledo residents were arrested Saturday on Interstate 75 after they allegedly shoplifted items from two Findlay Village Mall stores, Findlay police reported. One of the suspects pepper-sprayed a store employee, police said.
Taken into custody were Asia Burwell, 19, on a robbery charge; Johntae Chatman, 24, on a complicity charge; and Lashonna Kincade, 22, for an outstanding felony warrant, police said.
A trooper from the Bowling Green post of the State Highway Patrol stopped the suspects’ car on Interstate 75 after Findlay police relayed a description of the suspects, their car and the license plate number. Several stolen items were found in the car, police said.
Police said they initially responded to a shoplifting complaint at the Buckle, a mall clothing store, at 3:10 p.m. Saturday.
A male store employee who tried to stop the theft had been pepper-sprayed by one of the suspects, police said. The suspects then fled, police said.
The employee suffered short-term injuries from the effects of the pepper spray and received first aid at the scene, police said.
Police said they learned the suspects had earlier stolen merchandise at Dunham’s Sporting Goods, another mall store.
A description of the suspects and their vehicle was then relayed to area law enforcement agencies.
