OTTAWA — Two Columbus Grove women were killed in a three-vehicle accident Friday afternoon on Ohio 65 in Putnam County.
The Lima post of the State Highway Patrol reported Christine A. Hayden, 62, and Joan M. Beam, 85, died of injuries suffered in the accident. Beam was a passenger in a 2008 Buick driven by Hayden.
According to the patrol, Hayden’s car was southbound on Ohio 65 approaching Road 9K at 2:38 p.m. when a northbound 2000 Lexus, driven by Alan J. Ducey, 59, of Ottawa, went left of center and struck the Hayden car head on. The patrol reported Ducey went left of center to avoid striking stopped traffic in the northbound lane.
Following the initial impact, the rear of the Hayden car was struck from behind by a southbound Mitsubishi truck driven by Asa J. Mortimer, 37, of Columbus Grove, the patrol reported.
Both Hayden and Beam were trapped in their car and had to be extricated using the “jaws of life” apparatus, the patrol reported. Hayden was taken to St. Rita’s Ambulatory Care Center in Ottawa, and Beam was taken by medical helicopter to St. Rita’s Medical Center in Lima.
According to the patrol, Ducey was taken to St. Rita’s Medical Center with serious but non-life threatening injuries, and Mortimer was taken to the ambulatory care center where he was treated and released.
Assisting at the scene were the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Ottawa Police Department, and the Ottawa and Kalida fire departments.
The accident shut down Ohio 65 for part of the afternoon. The investigation into the accident is continuing.
