Rural Deshler man killed in accident

DESHLER — A rural Deshler man was killed in a two-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon in Henry County.

Daniel R. Zernhel, 58, died after colliding with a vehicle driven by Patrick J. Jones, 23, of Toledo, at about 3:10 p.m. Wednesday on Ohio 65, according to the Henry County Sheriff’s Office.

Jones was driving south on Ohio 65 near Township H when he began to slow for a left turn into a driveway, according to the sheriff’s office. Zernhel, also southbound, failed to stop in time and collided with the rear of the Jones vehicle, the sheriff’s office reported.

Both vehicles overturned and both came to rest in a ditch. Zernhel’s vehicle then caught fire, according to the sheriff’s office.

Jones was transported to Wood County Hospital, Bowling Green, with incapacitating injuries, according to the sheriff’s office.

Zernhel was a Jackson Township trustee in Wood County. He took office in 2002 and his current term began in January, according to the Wood County Board of Elections.

The crash remains under investigation. Assisting at the scene were the Deshler Fire Department, Deshler Emergency Medical Service, Pat’s Towing and KK Collision.
