Charnes to lead university board

The University of Findlay on Friday named A.R. Charnes as the new chairman of its board of trustees.
Charnes succeeds C. Richard Beckett, a noted veterinarian who served on the board for 13 years.
Charnes, a 1966 graduate with a major in marketing, is retired vice president of marketing for Getty Petroleum Marketing and lives in McCormick, South Carolina.
Also, Brian Young was approved as vice chair; Sue Pirschel, secretary; and Martin Terry, treasurer. Each is a two-year term.
Sierra Hutton was approved as undergraduate student trustee, and Robert Braylock was approved as graduate student trustee, each of which also is a two-year term.
These trustees were approved for 2014-2017: James Appold, Pamela Beall, Mark Cassin, Clifford Cook, Craig Crotteau, Robert Fry, Michael Gardner, Kolleen Kirk, James Koehler II, Don Manley and Edward Rosenberry.
Separately, the board was told that summer enrollment is up 10 percent compared to enrollment for summer 2013, marking the third consecutive semester of enrollment increases.
The biggest increase is in international students, 295 compared to 150 last summer.
The university is also predicting enrollment increases for the fall semester, which begins Aug. 18.
In addition, the university said its retention rate for first-year students matriculating to their second year at UF increased significantly: 85 percent for the 2014-15 academic year compared to 79 percent for the 2013-14 year.
