COLUMBUS — An Ohio House Republican screening panel has picked Theresa Charters Gavarone, a Bowling Green councilwoman, to complete Tim Brown’s term as state representative for Ohio’s 3rd House District.
Brown, R-Bowling Green, is resigning as state representative to become president of the Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments.
Gavarone will be giving up her seat on Bowling Green City Council to take the House seat. She is expected to be sworn in on Aug. 2.
She graduated from Bowling Green State University with a business degree, then earned a law degree from the University of Toledo. She is an attorney, small-business owner, and mother of three.
Gavarone said her main concerns include families, children, schools, the impact of mental illness and drug addiction, and the role of small businessses in the local economy.
Brown said he has known and worked with Gavarone for years and endorsed her for the position.
“As a member of City Council, she has already established herself as someone capable of working in a bipartisan manner for the benefit of Wood County’s citizens,” he said.
The 3rd House District is made up of Wood County only.
Gavarone will be filling the House seat for the remainder of Brown’s term, but the position is up for election in November. The Wood County Republican Party’s Central Committee is expected to name Gavarone to appear on the November ballot as the Republican candidate, in Brown’s place.
Democrat Kelly Wicks, a Bowling Green business owner, will run against the Republican nominee in November.
