Trojans win tournament title

ROY — Findlay’s offense continued to click on Saturday, scoring 17 goals in a pair of hockey wins that earned the Trojans the championship of the Miami Valley Freeze Tournament at Hobart Arena.
Findlay beat Beavercreek 8-0 and Louisville (Ky.) Trinity 9-2 on Saturday. The championship was to be played on Sunday but was cancelled because of impending weather conditions. Findlay was awarded the championship based on a system of points earned not only for overall wins, but also for periods won or tied. Findlay amassed 14 of a possible 15 points through three games. Troy was second with 12.5.
Findlay outshot the opposition 105-21 in Saturday’s two games and raced to 4-0 leads in both matchups.
Eight players scored goals in the 8-0 win over Beavercreek. Noah Hindall, Justan May and Brandon Armstrong led the attack with a goal and an assist each.
In Findlay’s 9-2 win over Trinity, Mason Williams and Connor Curlis both had a hat trick and Devon Steart, a recent walk-on to the team, had an assist in his first varsity game. Noah Hindall scored a goal and had four assists, with Curlis handing out three assists and Williams and Matt Atkins two each.
It was the second straight year Findlay has won the Miami Valley Freeze Tournament, and the second straight tournament title this season for the Trojans, who won their own Christmas Tournament last weekend. Findlay improved to 9-8-2 with its seventh straight win.
Findlay returns to Northwest Hockey Conference action this weekend with league games against Sylvania Northview on Friday and Toledo St. Francis on Saturday. Both games will be played at Tam-O-Shanter Arena in Sylvania.
