College Basketball: Defiance’s Tietje earns HCAC honor

DEFIANCE — Kelsey Tietje, a freshman for Defiance College’s girls basketball team and a Patrick Henry graduate, earned Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference player of the week honors for last week.
Tietje, a 6-foot-3 center from Deshler, averaged 17.7 points, 17 rebounds and 2.3 blocks in her three games from Dec. 28 through Jan. 4. She had 26 rebounds against Hanover on Saturday, which set a HCAC record, and also scored 18 points and had a career-high five blocks.
As good as Tietje was Saturday, her performance in the Albion Tournament Dec. 28-29 complimented the freshman’s stellar season. She had 15 points and 16 rebounds in the Dec. 28 win over Albion, and scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the Dec. 29 loss to Olivet.
Tietje is third in the HCAC in scoring (17.8 points per game) and first in rebounding (12.5) by over four rebounds per game over Bluffton’s Brooke Ruffer (8.4 rebounds per game).
Tietje had four straight double-doubles to start the season, and has a double-double in seven of 11 games for Defiance (3-8, 0-4 HCAC).
