St. Francis nips Trojans

SYLVANIA — Matt Oblinger and Mike White teamed up on two goals, the second coming with just 5:26 to play, and Toledo St. Francis edged Findlay 2-1 on Saturday in a Northwest Hockey Conference game at Sylvania’s Tam-O-Shanter Arena.
Following a scoreless first period, Oblinger, assisted by White and Ricky Kwapich, put St. Francis on the board with a power play goal with 3:34 left in the second period. Findlay answered with a power play goal of its own 1:31 later, with Mason Williams scoring off assists from Connor Curlis and Noah Hindall.
White’s game-winner came 9:34 into the third period on assists by Oblinger and Aaron Natyshak as St. Francis posted its second 2-1 NHC win over Findlay this season.
St. Francis had a slight 33-30 edge in total shots on goal. Joe Longo made 31 saves for Findlay, 10-9-2 overall and 1-3-1 in league play. Cade Phibs had 29 saves for St. Francis.
Findlay will take part in its fourth tournament of the season this week when the Trojans go up against an elite field of teams at the Walsh Jesuit Invitational. Findlay will face No. 13-ranked Gilmour Academy in Friday’s 7 p.m. opener, then goes against No. 7 Walsh Jesuit at 10 a.m. and No. 5 Parma Heights Holy Name at 7:30 p.m. in Saturday’s matchups. On Sunday, Finday faces Culver Academy, the No. 1-ranked team in Indiana, in a 9:30 a.m. contest.
