Area Colleges: Thomas leads ONU women past Capital

ADA — Carly Thomas dropped in a team-high 16 points and had three assists as Ohio Northern won its third straight game Saturday with a 60-52 Ohio Athletic Conference victory over Capital University at the ONU Sports Center.
The Polar Bears (12-3, 5-3 OAC) shot 47.9 percent (23 of 48) from the field, including 45.5 percent (5 of 11) from 3-point range.
After trailing 28-26 at halftime, ONU opened the second half with a 9-2 run to go ahead 35-30 with 16:52 to play.
Jordan Kimes, who finished with 14 points, four rebounds and three blocks, sunk a 3-pointer to make it 53-47 with 3:18 remaining and the Polar Bears were able to stifle the Crusaders from there.
Capital (8-6, 5-3 OAC) made just 30.2 percent (19 of 63) of its shots and was held to 25 percent (6 of 24) from beyond the arc.
Sara Kocian added eight points and six rebounds for ONU, while Taylor Hermiller notched seven points, six boards and three assists and Cenzie Yoder grabbed 10 rebounds.
Kristen Thompson dumped in a game-high 19 points for the Crusaders and St. Wendelin graduate Cookie Geroski recorded a team-high nine rebounds.
LEXINGTON, Ky. — Nicole Coffman’s 28 points led five Transylvania University players in double figures Saturday as the Pioneers blasted Bluffton University 103-77 at Beck Center to stay perfect in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference play.
Transylvania, who improved to 14-1 overall and 8-0 in the HCAC, built a 39-22 lead with less than eight minutes to play in the first half before the Beavers closed the half on a 21-12 run to cut the deficit to 51-43 at the break.
Bluffton (8-7, 4-4) shot just 30.3 percent in the second half, though, and finished the game at 36.6 percent (26 of 71).
The Pioneers hit 47.8 percent (33 of 69) of their shots and outrebounded the Beavers 54-33.
Taylor Whitaker’s 3-pointer cut Transylvania’s lead to 73-62, but the Pioneers ended the game with a 30-15 scoring burst to keep Bluffton from mounting a comeback.
Alex McKenzie had 18 points and 10 rebounds, Katelyn Smith added 16 points and six boards, Madisen Webb notched 14 points, seven rebounds and seven assists and Alex Botkins recorded 12 points and 10 rebounds for Transylvania.
Whitaker finished with 27 points, while Kaitlyn Pennekamp and Brooke Ruffer each dropped in 14 points for Bluffton.
COLUMBUS — Ohio Northern University outscored Capital University 44-41 in the second half to escape with a 72-71 win in an Ohio Athletic Conference men’s basketball game Saturday.
Ten players on each team scored. Dominique Royal and Lucas Pennington had 16 and 14 points, respectively, to lead Ohio Northern (8-7, 4-4 OAC).
Andrew Bolka and Michael Green each had 13 points for Capital (6-8, 3-4 OAC).

LEXINGTON, Ky. — Transylvania outscored the Bluffton University men’s basketball team 19-13 in overtime to win 97-91 in a high-scoring Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup Saturday.
Parker Stansberry had 30 points to lead Transylvania (6-9, 4-4 HCAC), which shot 32 of 59 (54 percent) from the floor and 24 of 32 (75 percent) from the free-throw line.
Will Pope had 23 points for Bluffton (6-9, 2-6 HCAC). Thayne Recker and Billy Taflinger each added 20.
