Area Colleges: Marietta takes down ONU men

MARIETTA — Garrett Stephenson and RaNeal Ewing dropped in 16 points each for Marietta as the Pioneers topped Ohio Northern 76-71 in Ohio Athletic Conference action Saturday.
Isaiah Roux finished with 13 points, six rebounds and six assists and Dominique Royal tallied 13 points and eight rebounds for the Polar Bears (10-9, 6-6 OAC).
Roux hit a layup to put ONU ahead 71-68 with 1:43 left to play, but the Polar Bears failed to score the rest of the way.
ONU shot 42.4 percent (28 of 66) from the field and 81.2 percent (13 of 16) from the foul line.
Marietta hit 39.2 percent (29 of 74) from the floor and 75 percent (12 of 16) of its free throws.
The Pioneers (15-4, 10-2) outrebounded the Polar Bears 45-43, but ONU held a 46-34 advantage in points in the paint.
ONU women win
ADA — Jordan Kimes, Karissa Steffas and Brooke Espenschied all scored in double figures Saturday as No. 24-ranked Ohio Northern handed Marietta a 66-46 defeat in Ohio Athletic Conference action.
Kimes finished with 12 points and eight rebounds, Steffas tallied 12 points and Espenschied added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Polar Bears (15-4, 8-4 OAC).
Ohio Northern grabbed an early 10-2 lead, pushed it to 18-7 midway through the first half and went into halftime up 33-26.
The Polar Bears shot 36.9 percent (24 of 65) from the field, including 45 percent (9 of 20) from beyond the arc, outrebounded the Pioneers 48-36 and got 25 points off 15 Marietta turnovers.
Jessica Brogan led all scorers with 17 points for the Pioneers (9-10, 3-9), who were just 29.6 percent (16 of 54) from the field and only hit 10 percent (1 of 10) of their 3-point tries.
Taflinger sparks BU men’s upset
HANOVER, Ind. — Billy Taflinger finished with 32 points and Thayne Recker added 14 points and 13 rebounds as Bluffton University upset Hanover College 76-66 Saturday in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference competition.
The Beavers (7-12, 3-9 HCAC) trailed 29-27 at halftime, but shot 56.5 percent (13 of 23) from the field in the second half and outscored the Panthers 49-37 to come away with the victory.
Bluffton cashed in at the free-throw line, hitting 30 of 38 (78.9 percent) attempts in the game, including 21 of 25 (84 percent) in the second half. The Beavers also won the battle on the glass by a 36-24 margin.
Tim Bass paced Hanover (12-7, 8-4) with 23 points, while V.J. Billups and Evan Bingham each added 11 points.
BU women fall to Hanover
HANOVER, Ind. — Caitlin Bischoff finished with 19 points and six rebounds as Hanover College built an 18-point first half lead and cruised past Bluffton University 79-66 in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup Saturday.
The Beavers, who dropped to 11-8 overall and 7-5 in the HCAC, were led by Brooke Ruffer’s 26-point, 14-rebound performance, but were unable to track down the Panthers after trailing 41-27 at halftime.
Taylor Knight added 17 points and Taylor Whitaker tallied 11 points for Bluffton, which shot 37.3 percent (25 of 67) from the field, including 11.1 percent (2 of 18) from 3-point range.
Jessie Davidson contributed 17 points and Alicia Hopkins had 12 points and four assists for Hanover (11-8, 9-3 HCAC).
The Panthers hit just 35.5 percent (22 of 62) of their shots, but made 84.8 percent (28 of 33) at the foul line.
