Findlay swimming with confidence

Findlay High School and area boys and girls swimmers will be busing across the state instead of up I-75 this week.

But the way Findlay High coach Tim Lauth sees it, the change in venue won’t be a disadvantage.

“It’s not home territory, like we consider Bowling Green (State University) to be,” Lauth said.

“But our swimmers do have some experience there. We swam there in the Viking Invitational earlier this season and we were there last year for a dual with St. Ignatius. I think that goes a long way toward reinforcing a lot of confidence that we can go there, to Cleveland, and swim well.”

In years past, Bowling Green State University hosted the district meet. BGSU’s pool is undergoing a major renovation, though, so this years district, which includes a number of Division I schools from Northeast Ohio, has been moved to the Busbey Natatorium at Cleveland State.

“It’s going to different,” Lauth said. “But we’re going over Friday night to try and beat the weather, which has been more of a factor than usual this season. We don’t compete until Saturday night so we’ll get there, get settled in and get ourselves adjusted.”

Leading Findlay out of the blocks on Saturday will be sophomores Justin Hopkins and Tucker Stocker.

Hopkins has the fastest qualifying times in both the 200 (1:43.38) and 500 (4:44.4) freestyle races. Stocker is seeded third in the 100 butterfly (53.32) and sixth in the 200 free (1:4.97). One or both will also take part on relay teams that are seeded second in the 200 medley (1:40.07), third in the 400 free (3:02.5) and fifth in the 200 free (1:31.39).

Hopkins 200 free qualifying time is almost 31/2 seconds better than the 1:46.72 of second-seeded Davis Garrison of Ashland. His 500 free time is even more impressive, a full 10 seconds better than the mark of Lakewood St. Edward’s Mason Beck (4:54.45).

And the best may be still to come.

“It could be unnerving to think he may have peaked at the sectional. The funny thing is, we didn’t taper Justin for the sectional,” Lauth said.

“We didn’t make any adjustments going into sectionals. We’ll start making some adjustments this week, and once he’s rested, he should be even faster.”

Graham Copus is seeded fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.71), Jeremy Wilson is sixth in the 50 free (22.22) and Ross Stansbery is seventh in the 100 back (57.65). Findlay is also ranked high in the 200 medley (2nd, 1:40.07), 400 free (3rd, 3:20.56) and 200 free (5th 1:31.39) relays.

Findlay’s girls 200 medley relay team of Laura Wilson, Hannah Clinger, Kendra Wadding and Kaila Butterworth won a sectional title with a time of 1:53.85, the second fastest qualifying time entering the district meet. The same four girls are seeded sixth in the 400 free relay (3:49.72).

Clinger, a freshman, is also seeded second in the 200 IM (2:13.82) and third in the 100 breast (1:09.0). Wilson is seeded eighth in the 100 fly (1:02.00) and ninth in the 100 back (1:03.36).

The district meet gets under way on Friday with Division II teams. Ottawa-Glandorf’s Luke Kleman enters that competition with the best time in the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.39), while Ada’s Matthew Wilcox is seeded second in the 50 free (22.27) and Mitchell Wilcox is fourth in the 100 free (50.52). O-G’s 200 and 400 free relays and 200 medley relay were also among the top five district qualifying times.

On the girls side, Ottawa-Glandorf has the fastest qualifying time in the 200 medley relay (1:55.06), and a second-seeded swimmer in the 100 backstroke in Kathryn Samuelson (1:01.55).

The top two swimmers in each event, Division I and Division II, automatically qualify for next week’s state meet in Canton. Swimmers finishing lower than second can still advance, though, if their time is good enough to earn an at-large bid.
