College basketball: Ashland pulls away from UF women

ASHLAND — It was a back and forth struggle before Ashland finally pulled away for an 88-80 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball win over the University of Findlay Thursday night.
The game, which featured 19 lead changes, was tied at 77-77 with 2:06 remaining after Findlay’s Ciara Geiger hit three free throws. Ashland’s McKenzie Miller answered with a 3-pointer just seconds later before Jamie Sobczak went to the line and extended the Eagles lead to five at 82-77.
The Eagles (14-8, 12-6) would continue to extend their lead as Alyssa Miller scored four straight points to put Ashland up 86-77 with 36 seconds left. Findlay guard Karli Bonar then canned a three pointer to snap the scoring run, but Taylor Woods made two free throws for the Eagles to put the game out of reach.
Sophomore forward Margaret Wuebker led the Oilers with 19 points and six rebounds while junior guard Nikki Gunning had 12 points, five rebounds, three steals and two assists.
Junior forward Lacey Kessler (Riverdale) also reached double figures with 11 points to go along with five rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench for the Oilers (10-12, 7-11).
Woods led the Eagles with 25 points while Miller scored 20 points with 11 rebounds, five assists and five steals.
