COLUMBUS — Ohio Northern overcame a late 5-point deficit to record a 75-73 overtime Ohio Athletic Conference women’s basketball victory at Capital on Saturday afternoon at the Capital Center.
The Polar Bears ran their win streak to nine games and finished the regular season with a 21-4 overall record. They will be the No. 3 seed in next week’s Ohio Athletic Conference with a 14-4 league record.
Capital falls to 16-8 overall and 13-5 in the OAC.
Sophomore Carly Thomas led Ohio Northern with a game-high 20 points and junior Jordan Kimes had her ninth double-double of the season with 17 points and 13 rebounds.
Capital was led by Kristen Thompson with 17 points and Fostoria St. Wendelin grad Cookie Geroski with 14 points.
The victory was also the 200th career coaching win at Ohio Northern for 13th-year ONU head coach Michele Durand.
Balance key in ONU men’s win
ADA — A balanced offensive attack helped lift Ohio Northern’s men’s basketball team to an 88-85 victory on Senior Day against Capital on Saturday afternoon at the ONU Sports Center.
The Polar Bears improved their record to 16-9 on the season and 12-6 in Ohio Athletic Conference play and ran their winning streak to six games, while the Crusaders fell to 12-13, 9-9.
Ten different ONU players scored in the game with four scoring in double figures.
The Polar Bear attack was led by junior Isaiah Roux’s 13 points and five assists. Senior Dominique Royal chipped in 12 points, senior Branden Rushton recorded 11 points and junior Lucas Pennington added 10 points for ONU.
Capital was led by Andrew Bolka’s game-high 22 points and eight rebounds.
The Polar Bears clinched the No. 4 seed in next week’s OAC Tournament and will play the winner of the No. 5 and No. 8 seeds Tuesday night at the ONU Sports Center as the second game of a women’s/men’s doubleheader at approximately 8 p.m.
Pope leads Bluffton men to win
BLUFFTON — Will Pope netted 19 and Ryan Ebbeskotte 16 to power Bluffton University’s men’s basketball team past Transylvania 72-60 in a Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference game Saturday at the Sommer Center.
Arlington grad Thayne Recker had an 11-point, 10-rebound double-double as the Beavers improved to 10-15 overall and 6-12 in the HCAC.
Alex Jones led the Pioneers (9-16, 7-11) with 13 points. Parker Stansberry and Logan Wade both added 12 points.
BU women fall
BLUFFTON — Transylvania University’s Alex Botkin and Katelyn Smith combined for 42 points to power the Pioneers to an 85-73 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball win over Bluffton on Saturday at the Sommer Center.
Botkin scored 22 and Smith netted 20 as six Transylvania players scored in double figures. Madisen Webb scored 12 points, Nicole Coffman popped in 11 and Alex McKenzie and Jordin Fender both had 10 as the Pioneers improved to 23-2 overall and 17-1 in the HCAC.
Brooke Ruffer led the Beavers (14-11, 10-8) with a double-double of 22 points and 10 rebounds. Kaitlyn Pennekamp tossed in 16 points and Taylor Whitaker and Taylor Knight added 14 and 10 points respectively.
