UF Roundup: Petty leads Oilers at Bell Invitational

WINTER SPRINGS — Kasey Petty had the University of Findlay’s best round (75) and total score (280) of the tournament in leading the Oilers to an 11th-place finish in the Peggy Kirk Bell Invitational that wrapped up on Tuesday at the Tuscawilla Country Club in Winter Springs, Fla.
Petty, a sophomore from Groveport, had an 85-75-80–240 total in the three-day event, which is named after former Findlay High graduate and LPGA charter member Peggy Kirk Bell.
Brooke Albers (84-79-80) carded a 243, Shelby Warner (84-81-80) a 245 and Michele Schambs (85-81-82) a 248 to complete UF’s 976 team total. Findlay High graduate Taylor Tweed (95-93-87″”275), Hannah Schneider (97-99-97″”293) and Emily Mock (107-112-102″”321) rounded out UF’s lineup.
Lynn University won the tournament title with a 301-299-303–903 total. Florida Tech was second (309-310-294–913) and Rollins College, where Kirk honed her skills before turning pro, was third (305-307-310–922).

UF softball splits
CLERMONT, Fla. — Lauren Trumpler, a freshman out of Hopewell-Loudon, tripled, drove in one run and scored two to lead the University of Findlay softball team to a 5-1 win over the University of Sciences on Tuesday.
Anna Britvec also tripled and Courtney Dwyer had an RBI double for UF. Tawna Whited struck out eight in getting the win.
UF went 1-1 as it opened the 2014 season, dropping a 5-0 decision to Florida Tech University in Tuesday’s other game. Mohawk graduate Jackie Messersmith had one of the Oilers’ two hits in the loss.
