Local roundup: UF thrower Welch named Midwest Region field athlete of year

Justin Welch of the University of Findlay track team has been named the 2014 Midwest Region Field Athlete of the Year by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
Welch, a native of Luckey and a graduate of Eastwood High School, has twice posted a mark of 72-feet, 21/4 inches in the weight throw. That distance is best among NCAA Division II throwers this season, third all-time, and sixth all-time in all college divisions.
Welch, who was runner-up in the 2014 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Championship and sixth at the USATF Indoor Championship earlier this season.
Welch’s throw of 72-21/4 makes the UF junior the No. 1-seeded thrower in that event heading into the 2014 NCAA Division II National Championships Friday and Saturday in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Kuzara, Shell named
BLUFFTON — Bluffton University softball players Jess Kuzara and Chloe Shell have been named the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference hitter and pitcher of the week, respectively, after leading the Beavers to an 8-2 record in the season-opening Gene Cusic Classic in Florida.
Kuzara batted a team best .429 in the 10 games (12 for 28). She scored 12 runs, drove in 10, was 6 for 6 in stolen bases and had a.607 slugging percentage.
Shell threw a no-hitter against St. John Fisher and posted a 4-2 record with a 1.62 ERA in six starts. She struck out 22 batters in 201/3 innings and had three complete games.
ONU’s Letizia honored
ADA — Ohio Northern’s Meghan Letizia, a sophomore who won all six of her matches for the Polar Bears women’s tennis team, was named the Ohio Athletic Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week on Monday.
Letizia won two matches at No. 3 singles and one at No. 4. She also teamed with Kristin Cellentani for a 3-0 record at No. 3 doubles.
