UF’s Holmstrom is All-American

GENEVA — University of Findlay sophomore Kaley Holmstrom earned All-American honors for the Oilers as she finished 15th in the women’s 200 individual medley on the opening day of the NCAA Division II swimming and diving championships Wednesday at the Spire Institute.
Holmstrom made the “B” final and finished 15th with a time of 2:05.47 to earn her third All-American award for the Oilers after placing in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke last season.
West Chester’s Katharina Fischer won the race in a meet-record time of 1:59.21.
Junior diver Ashleigh Weddington just missed a top 16 finish as she was 18th in the women’s 3-meter diving competition with 396.2 points.
Clarion’s Kristin Day won the event with 504.1 points.
Findlay sophomore Jessica Ward will compete in the 100 backstroke on Friday and the 200 backstroke on Saturday.
NCAA opening matches
CLEVELAND — First round matchups are set as the University of Findlay wrestlers begin competition at the NCAA Division II wrestling championships Friday at Cleveland’s Public Hall.
UF senior Adam Walters will be gunning for his third All-American award in the 174-pound weight class. A 2012 NCAA runner-up, Walters (28-3) will open the tournament against St. Cloud State’s Clayton Jennissen (24-13).
Senior 125-pounder Ben Sergent (19-6) will be making his third NCAA tournament appearance and is seeking his first All-American award this weekend as he opens against Minnesota State-Moorhead’s Blake Bosch (21-12).
UF 149-pounder Dalton Nicely (14-22) will take on Central Missouri’s Frank Cagnina (36-2) while Bradley Metz (29-13) wrestles West Liberty State’s Mike Emery (16-6) in his first-round bout at 165 pounds.
