Prep football: Ohio-Michigan grid classic set for June 14 at Donnell

Rosters have been set for the first Ohio-Michigan Border Classic All-Star Game to be held June 14 at 1 p.m. Findlay’s Donnell Stadium.
Forty of the top senior football players in the state will comprise the Ohio team, which will be headed up by Lima Senior’s Mike Fell. Rounding out his staff will be Cincinnati Wyoming’s Aaron Hancock, Evergreen’s Paul Yunker, Steve Daly of Steubenville Central Catholic, Kevin Kline of Bryan, and former Leipsic and Napoleon head coach Tory Strock.
From 1993 to 2012, an Ohio prep all-star team would square off against the best from Pennsylvania in the Big 33 Classic. Last October, Big 33 officials announced they would be dropping Ohio and playing an all-star team from Maryland instead in the annual event.
With the approval of the Ohio High School Football Coaches Association, Mike Mauk, the highly successful former coach at Kenton High School who had twice been on the Ohio staff for past Big 33 games, and others turned their attention north.
“At that point we looked at the possibility of playing against Michigan (in a high school all-star game),” Mauk said last July when the Ohio-Michigan Border Classic was first announced.
“I was given the OK by our association (Ohio High School Football Coaches Association) to go ahead with negotiations, so we contacted the Michigan High School Football Coaches Association. We developed a rapport with them, representatives from both coaching associations got together and it took off from there.”
To avoid any possible conflicts with NCAA regulations and rules adopted by the athletic associations of both Ohio and Michigan, the high school all-star game could not be held at a college stadium like the Glass Bowl in Toledo and Doyt Perry Stadium in Bowling Green. That made Findlay and Donnell Stadium a viable option.
Players are to report on June 11 for three days of practice and preparation. The players are expected to be housed at the University of Findlay.
One area player, Patrick Henry lineman Colt Pettit, who has signed to play for Virginia Tech in college, will participate in the game.
Michigan’s roster has also been set and among the 40 players from the state coming to Findlay for the all-star game is University of Findlay signee Rico Lewis, a 6-foot-2, 170-pounds safety from Detroit East English Village.
