College baseball: UF splits with Tiffin

CHILLICOTHE — Reid Rothenbuhler laced a single to right to drive in the winning run in the bottom of the tenth inning and give the University of Findlay baseball team a 2-1 victory over Tiffin University on Wednesday in the first game of a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader at VA Memorial Stadium in Chillicothe.
Tiffin scored four times in the top of the sixth inning and won the second game 7-2. UF was the home team for the doubleheader, but the games were moved to Chillicothe due to wet grounds at UF’s home diamond.
Lead-off man Jordan Garcia lined a one-out single in the bottom of the tenth inning, took second on a sacrifice bunt and raced to third on a passed ball. Rothenbuhler, an Elmwood graduate, then delivered his clutch hit to give UF (4-11, 1-4 GLIAC) its first league win of the season.
Tiffin scored a run in the top of the first inning, but Findlay tied it in the fifth when Michael Louis had a two-out single and Tyler Donaldson followed with a liner to center that turned into an RBI triple when UT’s outfielder could not make a diving grab of the ball.
Alex Williams got the win, retiring all six batters he faced with two innings of perfect relief.
Drew Hargrove did not get the decision, but gave the Oilers an outstanding start. After giving up the first-inning run, the senior left-hander out of Troy pitched seven shutout innings. He scattered seven hits, struck out five and walked two.
Logan Sendelbach, a Hopewell-Loudon graduate, took the loss in relief for Tiffin.
UF took the early 1-0 lead in the second game. But Tiffin scored two runs in the fourth inning and tacked on four more in the sixth.
Nick Calandra (2B, 1B), Cole McMurray, Kyle Lento (2 RBI) and Cody Spires had two hits each for Tiffin (4-18, 3-2 GLIAC). Findlay High graduate Jordan Widman, playing rightfield for the Dragons, contributed an RBI single in the second.
Garcia had a double and two singles and scored a run for Findlay. Joe Sickler singled in a run in the first inning, and Riverdale graduate Derek Draper doubled and scored on Chase Goulette’s RBI single in the sixth.
TU’s Dan Sexton (1-2) went the distance for the win. A.J. Cecil, the first of three UF pitchers, took the loss.
