Prep baseball: Arlington duo combines on no-hitter

WAYNESFIELD — Arlington’s Tyler Richards and Nick Affholder combined on a no-hitter on Monday and the Red Devils, held hitless themselves for five innings, blew it open in the sixth inning to run-rule Waynesfield-Goshen 11-1 in the baseball season opener for both teams.
Richards, a senior right-hander, started and went the first four innings. Affholder, a freshman left-hander, completed the no-hitter but did allow an unearned run in the sixth.
Arlington finally got to Waynesfield-Goshen’s Trey Crumrine, a sophomore who had a no-hitter as well through five innings. The Red Devils collected all five of their hits in the top of the sixth, including an RBI single and two-run double by Jordan Freed, two singles by Tyler Starr and a two-run double by Zach Durliat,

MCCOMB — Bluffton and McComb had so much fun playing Monday’s baseball season opener that they didn’t want to stop. Finally, Bluffton plated a run in the 11th inning for a 3-2 nonleague victory.
Chris McClain singled three times and drove in two runs for Bluffton. Austin Bricker also had three singles.
Blake Glaser had a pair of singles for McComb.

DOLA — An eight-run third inning was all Ada needed Monday as the Bulldogs downed Hardin Northern 8-7 in the nonconference baseball season opener for both schools.
Slade Downing doubled and drove home three runs for Ada. Seth Evans picked up the win in relief.
Jacob Gossard had four singles and four steals for the Polar Bears. Brett Roby had three hits and drove in three runs.

ARCADIA — A five-run sixth inning blew open a close game and Toledo Christian went on to win 12-4 over Arcadia on Monday in the nonleague season opener for both schools.
Garrett Enders and A.J. Lentz each had two hits for the Redskins. Tristan Love had a single and an RBI.

RIDGEWAY — Reed Hovest belted three doubles and a triple, scored three runs and drove in two in powering Pandora-Gilboa to a 13-10 win over Ridgemont in a slugfest season opener on Monday.
P-G fell behind 9-8 after five innings, but scored three times in the sixth inning and added another two runs in the seventh to forge back in front.
