University of Findlay senior Reid Rothenbuhler ignited two first-inning rallies on Tuesday as the Oilers got in front early and held on the rest of the way for a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader sweep of Saginaw Valley State.
Rothenbuhler doubled in a run in the first inning of the opener, helping UF take a 2-0 lead in a game the Oilers would win 10-8. The Oilers’ third baseman, an Elmwood graduate, then blasted a three-run home run during a seven-run first inning that propelled UF to an 8-5 victory in game two.
Riverdale graduate Derek Draper had three hits and drove in three runs in the first game. A.J. Cecil pitched 32/3 innings to get his first win of the season. Alex Williams picked up his third save.
Mike Steele also earned his first win of the season in the second game. After Saginaw Valley (4-14, 1-7 GLIAC) broke out for five runs in the fifth inning, though, Jake Ireland came in and pitched hitless ball the rest of the way.
Findlay leveled off at 5-5 in league play with the sweep and improved to 8-12 overall.
