Findlay High’s tennis team was not at full strength Tuesday afternoon. But the Trojans got clutch three-set wins from Logan Sullivan at No. 3 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Tanner Graves and Hyunchl Lee in beating Bowling Green 4-1 in a blustery season opener at the FHS Courts.
With Findlay’s top two players — returning Three Rivers Athletic Conference champions Reid Teatsorth and Max MacDonald — away during Findlay High’s spring break, FHS coach Sean Swisher had to shuffle his lineup a bit.
Sophomore Jake Elbin, expected to play at No. 3 singles, moved up the No. 2 spot in the lineup and came through with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Austin Ray. Sullivan then stepped in at No. 3 and posted a 6-1, 5-7, 6-3 victory over Bowling Green’s Alex Messinger.
Graves and Lee also had a come-back win at No. 1 doubles, rallying from a first-set loss to beat BG’s Matt Allen and Joe Buzzelli 4-6, 6-1, 6-4. Brent Gorman and Bryan Swick completed Findlay’s win by beating Jacob Luder and Stephen Kampf 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 doubles matchup.
Bowling Green’s lone win came at No. 1 singles where Ryan Mottsinger defeated Ian Laird 6-3, 6-4.
Findlay returns to action Monday when the Trojans will host Sylvania Southview at the FHS Courts. The Trojans open Three Rivers Athletic Conference play Tuesday at Toledo St. Francis.
